The 1-1 draw between the United States and the Netherlands on Wednesday produced an interesting scenario leading into the final and third round games in group E.
Both the Americans or the Dutch could guarantee that they would be safe in the 16th round even though both teams would have done so with a minimum tie in their final game on Tuesday. The USA will play Portugal while the Netherlands will take on Vietnam
In reality, however, both will be looking for much more than this. Being the first in the group E is a way to gain having a better position in an elimination bracket. which is a prize that is well worth pursuing.
The two 2019 finalist will each attempt to win handsomely over their lesser-ranked opponents. And should they do both succeed then goal difference will be considered as the primary tiebreaker.
In this regard it is the Americans have the upper hand with a +3 to the Netherlands +1.
It could be claimed that goal-scoring superstar Lindsey Horan and her teammates will have a harder time against Portugal than the Portuguese will in Vietnam.
Portugal as well as Vietnam will start their games on Thursday at 3.30 a.m. Eastern Time on FS1 and each is guaranteed to be eliminated by the loss.
